3 Things Not to Do on a Nursing Contract Role

At VNS Nursing Agency, we offer exciting contract roles to current and new nurses. So, here is a little tip sheet on some of the things to avoid whilst on a nursing contract role.
Don’t stay in your comfort zone
It is normal to be shy and a little nervous when you first start in a new and unfamiliar place. But don’t let this ruin your whole experience or hinder your chance at making friends early.
What to do instead
- Say yes when invited to do something different. Bingo night at the local pub, an off-road trip on your day off or camping under the stars. Force yourself to endure awkward hurdles as these initial events will pave the way to a great experience and new friendships.
- If you consider yourself an introvert, setting small but achievable goals can help make the experience less daunting. This may include joining the local gym, initiating a non-work-related conversation with at least one new person a day or asking a work colleague to grab a drink after a shift.
- In the breakroom, put down your phone and strike up a conversation with your co-workers. Ask them for food recommendations, great hikes, good coffee and key local “must visit” spots. Before long, you’ll find people with a common interest who may want to play tourist with you.
Don’t overpack
For new travel nurses, over-packing is a common mistake. We understand you’re excited, and don’t want to forget anything, but you’ll quickly learn the benefits of a minimalist lifestyle.
The beauty about contract work is you get guaranteed hours within a hospital or facility, while not being tied down to one employer. If you feel like a change after a few weeks, you have the flexibility to do so. If you’re hauling a mountain of heavy items from place to place, you’ll start to dread the whole experience.
What to do instead
- Investigate what’s included in your furnished housing. Some will offer an extensive amount of furniture such as beds, couches and even bedside lamps, while others will only provide the minimum.
- Regarding your wardrobe, think about items that can be worn for multiple purposes. Avoid the “nice to haves” if tight on space and have limited opportunities to wear them. Consider the weather and what you’ll wear on your days off when exploring.
- Being away from home can feel isolating at times so bringing a few special items such as cherished photos, your favourite mug and your pair of Ugg boots can help eliminate those feelings.
Remember, the less you bring the less you need to worry about!
Don’t act like a temporary nurse
Staff and patients are counting on you to give your best. They already consider you part of the team and it’s your job to be confident, adaptable and the best nurse you can be. Don’t consider yourself as another staff member just filling a vacancy.
What to do instead
- From the moment you start interacting with a new employer, make the first impressions count. Introduce yourself confidently, show excitement about joining the team and act with kindness and respect.
- Avoid being overconfident. If somebody is explaining something to you that you already know, allow them to finish. Your knowledge and skills will soon reveal themselves.
- Ask questions and get to know the unit/department you’ve been assigned. Don’t assume you know how the hospital works based on previous experience; regardless how extensive this may be. You’re likely joining a tired, understaffed team so bringing joy, happiness and a smile to your shift will go a long way now and for future travel contracts.
- Stay busy. If you have some spare time, ask around if anybody would like a hand. Volunteer to assist with difficult cases and even restock and clean up high traffic areas.
So, make the most of a nursing contract with VNS by getting out of your comfort zone, not over packing and acting confident in a new environment.
